Installing

• Open the DMG, drag Spalt to Applications, open it.
• Open a repository, or clone one, or add a whole folder of checkouts as a project.
• A repository under Desktop, Documents or Downloads raises macOS's own folder prompt the first time; that is macOS asking, with Spalt's reason attached.
• Spalt uses the git on your Mac. If the Xcode command-line tools are not installed, macOS offers to install them the first time git is needed.

What it does on your Mac

• Reads and writes the repositories you open, with git. Review notes and the undo journal are stored inside each repository's .git; settings and cached lists in~/Library/Application Support; logs with secrets masked in ~/Library/Logs.
• Talks to GitHub, Jira and the AI account you configure — only after you connect them. Tokens live in the macOS Keychain and never reach the web layer. AI is off by default and enabled per repository; the first send shows exactly what would leave.
• Checks for updates once a day against this site and asks before installing. Settings → About switches the daily check off.
• Nothing else. No analytics, no crash reports sent anywhere, no telemetry.

Updating

A newer version arrives as a toast with one button, or from Spalt ▸ Check for Updates…. The download is verified against a key baked into the app before a byte is written; installing and restarting are each one click.
